Leaders from various levels of government, industry representatives, peak bodies, and the not-for-profit sector will convene in Canberra next month for the National Regional Housing Summit. This pivotal event will address the pressing housing needs of regional Australia, emphasizing home ownership, social and affordable housing, and rental availability across different regional housing markets. By showcasing successful examples from various regions, attendees can gain insight to implement similar models in their own communities. Recognizing the diverse nature of regional Australia, a one-size-fits-all approach proves ineffective. Thus, adaptable initiatives and collaborative efforts between government, industry, and the not-for-profit sector are crucial in tackling this issue.

RAI CEO Liz Ritchie said a significant societal shift was underway in Australia and it was vital decision makers planned, funded, and implemented programs and policies that recognised that.

“Data shows us over the last decade the number of people choosing a life in regional Australia has been growing. The COVID pandemic supercharged this momentum, and more and more people are ‘voting with their feet’, choosing the regions as the place they want to live, work and play,” Ms Ritchie said.

Will these knowledgeable professionals present practical and effective solutions that cater to the needs of everyday Australians? Are they capable of thinking outside the box and overcoming the traditional obstacles in the housing sector to boost the availability of homes in regional areas?

The aims of the summit are very lofty and offer great promise. Let’s hope they can deliver great options for regional living that’s affordable and accessible.
